“Modigliani. I have walked across the bridge that does not exist”

An interactive performance “Modigliani. I have walked across the bridge that does not exist” is an experimental work of a Ukrainian theatre director Rostyslav Derzhypilsky.

This is a story about the last three years of life and love of a world-renowned artist Amedeo Modigliani, one of his works being one of the three most expensive paintings in the world. Though, this story happens in the 21st century, in a twisted mind of a man that considers himself to be an absolute genius. A collage of real and fictional characters, a two-level art space with easels and hospital beds, choreography by Olga Semioshkina, live music, art performances and some interesting facts about life and work of one of the most remarkable artists delivered by an honored journalist of Ukraine Oleh Verhelis contribute to an ambitious and challenging theatrical experiment of Rostyslav Derzhypilsky.

The main character identifies himself as Modigliani, his twisted mind makes the chamber in an asylum take different forms, morphing into an art gallery, then apartments, then a hall of an art academy and night streets of Paris, then, in a flash, it becomes a bohemian café “La Rotonda” – a rendezvous for prominent artists, poets, sculptors and playwrights of the early 20th century (who also live in his deformed imagination). Though, there are characters that belong to the real world: his doctor, parents-in-law and his wife Jan – a self-denying woman who loves him so devotedly that keeps taking fruitless attempts to help him recover from that mental disease which is ruthlessly taking away the only sense of her life – her love – her man…
